hosono’s solo career would take many twists and turns from this point forward, with forays into exotica, electronic, ambient, and techno, culminating in the massive success of techno pop group yellow magic orchestra (ymo), who made their debut in 1978. admired by artists ranging from van dyke parks to mac demarco, hosono continues to forge ahead as he heads into his fifth decade as a musician. with the re-release of his key albums for the first time outside of japan, his genius will be discovered by a whole new generation of fans around the world.

mop mop is the brainchild of andrea benini, musician, producer, dj who has been active for more than ten years exploring a large variety of musical genres, from club to jazz music. „kiss of kali“ is the name of his second album - originally released in 2008 only on cd, now available on vinyl for the first time.

lithuanian based label sodai started its journey in 2016, making it a label still in it’s infancy but making a big impression. owned by artist gardens of god, who started the label to create his own ‘no limits’ plat-form for his experimental sounds and projects. while at the same time a platform to give other artists the chance to also have freedom with art and music. with releases from raxon, few nolder and third son under their belt, the label shows no sign of slowing down, next in line is italian producer alex schaufel (suara, diynamic) who is welcomed to the label with a his heavy hitting four track ep entitled ‘roots’.

although ultimately a comedy act, the cuban brothers are simultaneously serious musicians who have played with prince, been on the road with james brown and supported fatboy slim, chuck berry and de la soul to name but a few. 2018 will see them perform with a 12-piece band and a rotating roll-call of special guests on board to help them turn 20, including the average white band’s hamish stuart and the jungle brothers’ baby bam. ‘la familia’, released 24th august via sunday best, features a brand new cubans track, ‘i hate hate’, alongside such classics by roy ayers, bill withers, erykah badu, a tribe called quest, children of zeus, d’angelo and more. the cuban brothers clearly have an impeccable taste in music.

for our second release of 2018 ears have eyes are back with the third instalment of our throng of orbs compilation series. this time around we welcome back old friends, and bring in some new names to the ehe fold, with a collection of tracks spanning deep emotive house music, broken beats and acid dancefloor pressure. first up we have contours, who burst onto the scene in 2015 with an excellent release on the mighty rhythm section, and has put out a slew of great records since then. dither takes time to unfold, but when the fluid acid line emerges from the heady percussion he really sets up the track for dancefloor perfection. for the a2 we welcome back chocky to the label, and he serves up a slice of weighty house music that drips quality and emotion. pickle dat kicks off with an absolute beauty of a groove, understated but weighty, and from there chocky goes on to sprinkle just the right amount of seasoning, with soulful rhodes licks and a wonderful bass line. off the back of their excellent 12- on love on the rocks, elles x violet kick off the b side with yrnyb, a tried and tested dancefloor destroyer. when we heard elles playing this in a dark basement in peckham, we just had to sign it. sometimes a kick drum, an acid line and a half heard vocal is all you need. finishing off the release we have dublin artist replete serving up a lovely slice of hazy, percussive house music that slowly builds to a crescendo. an acidic bassline sits nicely over congas and a warm, rounded kick drum.

hailing from the rhythm plate multiverse, pressed for time is one of the many outposts carrying the work of matlock s finest house music protagonists. reaching beyond the regular roster of goshawk, yse and the full-blown plate, this latest transmission calls on deep cover uk house crew brs, also known as british rhythm services, who step up with some crucial workouts for sophisticated dancefloors. the quartet of ben vecara, rob evans, steve wilson & dom thompson have a sizable legacy behind them, not least from the early 00s when they were regularly rolling out releases for the likes of 20:20 vision, cyclo and friends & families. after a quiet patch their return is marked out by a broad spectrum of deep house delights locked onto the kind of shuffled grooves that rhythm plate heads should be more than happy with, and plenty of loose, live-sounding keys to boot.

shot at dawn is a scintillating return for a band who have been collectively quiet (but individually busy) for a few years, and (once again) sounds like the music of tomorrow. lyricist leon mayes wills the real revolution to come, morris’s uneasy keys and driving, bittersweet production embodies the uk s collective anxiety/apathy coupled with an impending sense of doom, as we all obediently troop off the cliff like lemmings, while vocalist michelle manetti s melancholy delivery is the perfect foil both, recalling tracey thorn at her best.

2lp , full sleeve, as always with hell yeah, the next release comes from an artist label boss marco fell utterly in love with before forming a close musical relationship. his name is calm, and this summer he releases his eighth studio album, by your side. it is an effortlessly evocative long player and magical ten track trip into soothing sonic waters, glistening harmonies and horizontal rhythms. calm is legendary japanese artist fukagawa kiyotaka, someone who has been making deep house, ambient and downtempo grooves since the late nighties, and always teasing spine tingling emotions out of his machines. his last album—2015 s from my window—cast a real spell on marco and encouraged him to reach out. the pair eventually hooked up in tokyo and found real musical kinship while playing records together.

singer, songwriter and lifelong fan josé james honors the great bill withers with the september 28 release of “lean on me” (blue note), a loving tribute album that features 12 of the legendary singer and songwriter’s most undeniable and soulful songs in honor of his 80th birthday year. “lean on me” was produced by blue note president don was and recorded in capitol’s legendary studio b with a dream team band: pino palladino (bass), kris bowers (keys), brad allen williams (guitar), and nate smith (drums), along with special guests including vocalist lalah hathaway, saxophonist marcus strickland, and trumpeter takuya kuroda.

korpus 9 records kicks off with a brand new ep from dubspeeka, featuring four tracks of high impact and atmospheric techno. korpus 9 records is a brand new techno label from russia managed by kwazalski. the main aim of the label is to release fresh and innovative material, not only digitally, but also on vinyl. all the imagery and influences of the label come from an abandoned research station that is deep underwater, where unusual events are happening around it on a constant basis. charged with the first release is shadowy bristolian producer dubspeeka, who has put out his music on drumcode, senso sounds and get physical, runs skeleton recordings and has a fierce techno sound. the opener here is garrison, a driving number with heavy drums and a warm but edgy mood. garrison 2 is more spaced out, with celestial pads baring a feeling of suspense above the firmly rooted drums. garrison 3 then has lumpy drums that bob up and down, as acid lines, water sounds and metallic hits all add atmosphere to the cavernous groove. last of all, garrison 4 is an eerie dub techno track with real drive but also plenty of thoughtful emotions. it closes out a brilliant first ep on this exciting new label.

counterweight welcomes to the label the rising berlin artist opål with this excellent 4-track full of techno ep... the title track, luminescence, is a rough and hard hitting 4/4 warehouse destroyer. -impala- reduces the tension and shows a more melodic side of the artist but still keeping his characteristic industrial touch. on the b side opål shows what is the definition of -driving- techno with -eclipse-, this is simply amazing. the last track is an absolutely outstanding remix by the italian artist pvs, who explores new atmospheric shapes and goes beyond simple 4/4 structures. pump up the volume, this is real shit!

well, this is different… fourth kind the self titled mini album on omniverse records. it’s hard to pinpoint a genre with records like this, produced by marc mac of 4hero and similar to some of the 4hero output, it defies genre and fits somewhere in-between many. the production is heavily reliant on synthesisers and vintage drum machines in places but is full of real life and organic movements, this is partly down to the signature drums played by luke parkhouse. the only other guest spot is filled by nu jazz funker pascal strauss aka luman child who plays bass guitar on “take me to your sky” which along with “afterglows” are the closest we get to dance tracks, in most parts a 70s fusion feel is present. the short interlude type tracks are just as important and i would go as far as to say vital to telling the story. moogs, arps and solina strings weave patterns throughout, all in all, across the 10 tracks the album is a journey of mood and emotions. 180g pressing.

fresh names to visionquest, but certainly not new to the game, more than material is the promising new project between two bonafide french selector statesmen who collectively boast decades of dancefloor and studio science: jedsa soundorom and gauthier dm. launching their new alias earlier this year on zingiber audio, their signature has been tangible from the off, deep weighted grooves, warm dynamics and total immersion.

georgia-born, brooklyn-based sophia saze set up dusk & haze to release ‘genre-free’ experimental music, exhibited in the label’s debut release entitled ’solace’ ep featuring four versatile cuts from sophia herself and twisted electro and techno remixes from umwelt and benjamin damage. the second release comes from the enigmatic sdx, a masked artist who’s fiercely championed left-of-centre dance music for decades. crunchy drums and a thumping bassline kick things off in ‘ms 04’ before los angeles duo 138 provide an outstanding remix incorporating a cacophony of raw breaks. modulated flutters, warped blips and white noise create ‘ms 08’, leading into the organic drums and off-kilter arpeggios of ‘007’ until new york’s sc- 164 reworks ‘007’ delivering a pulsating sub and distorted vocal chops. sdx’s ‘nocturnal’ drops on dusk & haze on 10th september 2018.

the jamaican sonia pottinger was once called “the most important jamaican woman involved in music business”. dancing down orange street is a collection of some of her famous productions for different artists. the album captures the moment when rocksteady transformed into reggae by speeding up a little and moving towards a more jerky and less smooth musical palette. famous singers as delano stewart and ken boothe are present on the album with multiple tracks. the vocal trio the melodians (known for their hit “rivers of babylon”) provide a couple of beautifull songs. even after all those years (released for the first time in 1969) the compilation remains a treasure of showcasing some of the finest songs produced by sonia. sonia pottinger was married to music producer lyndon pottinger and started to record musicians in 1996. during the late 60’s she produced songs for joe white, the melodians and toots & the maytals.

upcoming french producer matthieu faubourg, who has worked extensively with guys like dj boring and black loops, is firing up this heavy 12- on -smile for a while.- stripped down house bangers all the way - from more laid-back, synth-oriended stuff over to some 90s-tingled house groover, ending up with a frantic 6 a.m. anthem on the b-side this ep is all you need to keep your floor dancing till the end of the year...

finally a new sampler on siena! this time on 3.0 a broad range of sounds from funk to techno. the a-side starts with a smooth summer jam by griffy hildalgo. perfect to start a roadtrip! tetelepta & gerressen teamed up to fill out the a2 with their raw sampling house joint. for the techno heads among us, yes, the b sides delivered it. b1 start with bas amro with his emotional melodies and deep grooves. the closing track for this ep is by ben buitendijk, who delivered a true masterpiece for detroit techno lovers - don’t miss it!

after some outstanding releases from stojche, aybee and kuba sojche, dmk step up again with another impressive release, this time with john shima who delivers the stealth ep. after recent releases on exalt and firescope records, the quality continues across this ep, with four cuts of deep atmospheric techno.

strange alliances holds two striking and contemporary tracks by the tel aviv native – who also has releases out on turbo and life and death - plus remixes by trikk and rebolledo. and so it seems the amsterdam based label has another winner on their hands. with autarkic having an exceptional personality one would expect the same from his music. and this is exactly what you get with strange alliances, as his originality shines through on both tracks. interesting fact is that autarkic used a lot of live instruments and his own vocals on both tracks, adding to the ingenuity of the dgtl 006 release.

hilltown disco are back with another attention-grabbing release. the a-side sees the return of the duo who can do-no-wrong, crossmods with an electro-masterclass that takes you on an out-of-this-world journey, followed by a clean-cut, snappy remix of the crossmods track by the belgium act, datawave. flip-over the record and we have acid-genius chris moss acid contributing a re-mastered version of his beautifully-chaotic acidic-banger, the mossquito. continuing the acid theme, dundee producer ansata gives us a real 303 work-out that is guaranteed to fill any dance floor. last but not least, crossover network join the hilltown disco family with a high energy, banger with an iconic old-school electro vocal though out to complete the release.

there is no elsewhere is haiku salut’s third album and sees the acclaimed trio from derbyshire continue their distinctive re-imagining of dreampop and rural electronica. influenced by the evocative film soundtracks of yann tiersen and benoît charest, the genre-melting electronica of early múm, and the impressionistic writing of haruki murakami, the band have previously released two critically acclaimed albums whilst last year they collaborated with public service broadcasting on the track “they gave me a lamp”, which featured on the psb’s top five album, every valley. yet it is this release that sees the band finally find their place, both musically and politically.

amish boy aka sküge (not to be confused with skudge) is hugues croibien, a thirty seven year old belgian who has experimented with electronic music since his teens. with a diet of seal phüric, the prodigy, autechre and unit moebius stoking his primordial fire, croibien began to align with the rage that exists in the breakcore genre. already an addict of reggae and dub at this time, croibien decided to create some cut-up raggacore with his brand new ableton live 3 software. meanwhile with friends, croibien created break n brol, a non-lucrative association which tried to promote alternative electronic music in liège where he lived. they premiered some bassline stars kanji kinetic and -squire of gothos- on the belgian scene, alongside other alternative electronic composers and musicians like subjex, ebola, mustard gunn and herrmutt lobby. the fellowship decided to create a free net label to release compilations with the bnb party artists. the rough style techno resurgence over the last few years has precipitated a metamorphosis, sküge became amish boy more glitchy than techno, more offbeat than acid and more ambivalent than industrial. although heavily invested for two decades now, laika test project on power vacuum will be croibiens first vinyl release, with a follow-up already in the pipeline.

new glasgow electro and techno label tremors presents our first vinyl release - aftershocks volume 1, a collection of remixes of tracks from our bandcamp releases. the a1 comes from electro legend dexter, a man who needs no introduction, remixing old boy s tracer. next up is james shinra (analogical force) one of our favourite contemporary electro artists, remixing arctor memory gene. on the b-side we have patrick walker (forward strategy group) remixing arctor s selfish lover into a slamming acid techno banger. rounding it off is relatively unknown hungarian producer david harleydson who has been self-releasing highly impressive electro albums through bandcamp. he has applied his own unique style in a remix of arctor the gulf.
